Acupuncture
is a complete medical system that is used to both treat,
and prevent illness. It originated over 5,000 years ago in the Orient
and is the oldest continually practiced medical system in the world.
Recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World
Health Organization (WHO) to be a safe and effective treatment for
a wide variety of health conditions, acupuncture is a gentle and natural
way to restore and maintain health and wellbeing.
Acupuncture works by enhancing the flow of Qi throughout the body.
Qi (pronounced "chee") is the Chinese name for life energy.
It circulates
through the body in channels called Meridians, similar to the way that
rivers flow through the Earth. When the Qi in the body is abundant and
moving properly, health is promoted. An obstruction of Qi in the body
acts like a dam, backing up flow in one area of the body, and restricting
the flow in other areas. When the Qi is depleted or obstructed, illness
may
be manifested by symptoms of the body, mind, or spirit. An acupuncture
treatment involves the placement of fine, sterile needles at specific
points
on the body. This technique restores the proper balance and flow of Qi,
which in turn, helps the patient to heal from acute and/or chronic problems,
and strengthens and balances his/her body, mind, and spirit.
