Psychiatry is the medical specialty that studies, diagnoses and treats a variety of
disorders that affect the mind. These disorders can cause disturbances in mood,
anxiety, attention, impulse control and well-being. They can also affect self-esteem,
identity, ability to maintain healthy relationships and successful work environments.

A psychiatrist is a physician who holds a medical degree and spends at least four
years in an approved residency training. They must be licensed in the state in which
they practice. As physicians, psychiatrists are the only mental health professionals
licensed to prescribe medication. Many psychiatrists are also trained in providing
psychotherapy. Psychiatrists often work in conjunction with other mental health
and medical professionals in treating a patient.
