Yoga has become very popular as a stress reliever and a way to become
more flexible - although people sometimes become discouraged doing the
poses precisely because they aren't very flexible! A primary purpose of yoga
is to develop self-compassion and acceptance. Students differ in flexibility and
breath capacity and anatomically there is wide variation in the way joints are
constructed. Some joints allow more opening than others. In yoga class we may
notice differences but are gently reminded to notice with curiosity rather than
judgment, whether observing ourselves or others. Yoga is a practice, not a
performance. Yoga is a way to discipline the mind that can reach beyond the
mat into our everyday lives.
